How to Check for clear title (i.e., is not under finance, stolen, or written off)
In Australia, the best way to check if a car, truck, or piece of machinery has a clear title (i.e., is not under finance, stolen, or written off) is by using the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR).
Steps to Check for a Clear Title on a Vehicle or Machinery:
- Get the Vehicle or Machinery Details
- For cars and trucks: You’ll need the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) or the Chassis Number.
- For machinery and other equipment: You’ll need the serial number.
- Visit the PPSR Website
- Go to the official PPSR website: https://www.ppsr.gov.au
- Perform a PPSR Search
- Enter the VIN, Chassis Number, or Serial Number.
- Pay a small fee (usually around $2).
- Download the official PPSR certificate as proof of the search.
- Check the PPSR Report
- If the vehicle or machinery has no security interests, it’s clear of finance.
- If it shows a security interest, it means there is finance owing, and you should contact the lender before purchasing.
- The report also shows if the vehicle has been written off or stolen.
Additional Checks (For Vehicles Only)
- NEVDIS (National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System): This is included in the PPSR search and will check if the vehicle has been written off or stolen.
- State-based registration checks: You can also verify registration details via the relevant transport authority (e.g., VicRoads, Transport NSW).
Why is a PPSR Check Important?
If you buy a vehicle or machinery that still has finance owing, the lender can legally repossess it—even if you paid the seller in full. Always get a PPSR certificate before finalizing any purchase.
